Jung’s (1921/1971) account of extraversion Every so often, a bank or hospital would ask Isabel to evaluate their female workers — typists, nurses — to determine the relationship between personality type and a woman’s “excellence” on the job. But the answer keys had been designed with men in mind, and Isabel found she had to tinker with the answer sheets to account for her belief that women were naturally less inclined to thinking than men. Eventually, she designed two separate answer sheets: one for men and one for women. Still, the theory Isable thought she knew so well sometimes caught her off guard. The best nurses, she was surprised to learn, were introverts; the correlation between introversion and the hospital’s assessment of job performance was perfect, which she found strange but did not dwell on. The best typists were intuitive and not sensing types, even though taking dictation had everything to do with sound and sight, with hands-on experience. Isabel assumed the problem was the nurses, the typists: They had not answered honestly, she thought.

ISFPs are introverts that do not seem like introverts. It is because even if they have difficulties connecting to other people at first, they become warm, approachable, and friendly eventually. They are fun to be with and very spontaneous, which makes them the perfect friend to tag along in whatever activity, regardless if planned or unplanned. ISFPs want to live their life to the fullest and embrace the present, so they make sure they are always out to explore new things and discover new experiences. It is in experience that they find wisdom, so they do see more value in meeting new people than other introverts.

Upon meeting her future son-in-law, she observed marked differences between his personality and that of other family members. Briggs embarked on a project of reading biographies, and she developed a typology based on patterns she found. She proposed four temperaments: Meditative (or Thoughtful), Spontaneous, Executive, and Social.[19][20] Then, after the English translation of Psychological Types was published in 1923 (having first been published in German in 1921), she recognized that Jung’s theory was similar to, yet went far beyond, her own.[1]:22 Briggs’s four types were later identified as corresponding to the Is, EPs, ETJs and EFJs.[19][20] Her first publications were two articles describing Jung’s theory, in the journal New Republic in 1926 (Meet Yourself Using the Personality Paint Box) and 1928 (Up From Barbarism).

Although it is criticised for its use of scales to identify binary preferences (scales are conventionally used to measure intensity over a continuum) (Pittenger, 2005), millions of people take the test every year, and the results are used for team building and management development (Chen & Lin, 2004). In other words, these people are generally social and pleasant to be around, tend to worry a lot, and aren’t big on trying new things. Women are more likely than men to fall into this category, the data showed.

No leader can rest if they think they have entrusted their organization to people who should not be trusted. But how to know? Well, you can’t, not completely. There are always rogue traders, engineers ignoring problems (think the culture of NASA ignoring the Challenger’s O-ring vulnerabilities) and routine personality-conflicts derailing mission. No organization can function optimally with all that anxiety. By reducing all this messy human complexity to 16 easy to manage categories much of the anxiety is brought under control. The organization can then function day-to-day.

  5. ESFJs are the stereotypical extroverts. They are social butterflies, and their need to interact with others and make people happy usually ends up making them popular. The ESFJ usually tends to be the cheerleader or sports hero in high school and college. Later on in life, they continue to revel in the spotlight, and are primarily focused on organizing social events for their families, friends and communities. ESFJ is a common personality type and one that is liked by many people.

Myers and Briggs held that types with a preference for judgment show the world their preferred judging function (thinking or feeling). So TJ types tend to appear to the world as logical, and FJ types as empathetic. According to Myers,[1]:75 judging types like to “have matters settled.” Those types who prefer perception show the world their preferred perceiving function (sensing or intuition). So SP types tend to appear to the world as concrete and NP types as abstract. According to Myers,[1]:75 perceptive types prefer to “keep decisions open.”

The deeper story, Emre found, began with Katharine Cook Briggs who became besotted with the ideas of Carl Jung, the Swiss psychoanalyst. When her daughter Isabel was born in 1897, she turned their living room into a “cosmic laboratory of baby training”, conducting experiments and drills that would eventually form the basis of a notebook called The Diary of an Obedience-Curiosity Mother. Katharine was responsible for the A-or-B question format, but her main concern was in finding out what conditions best allowed children to develop into “civilised adults”. Decades later, Isabel realised that an adapted questionnaire could become a “people sorting device”, one that could easily be transposed from children to organising a workforce.

Gus Fring, an ENTJ, portrays a drug kingpin who operates an underground meth business in the popular TV show ‘Breaking Bad.’ Minus the whole illegal drug business thing, ENTJs will succeed at almost anything they put their mind to – not just marketing. These guys are natural leaders and are strategic like no other. Along with their introverted counterparts, the INTJ (Walter White from Breaking Bad), they can be masterminds in business and subtly make everything go according to their plans. Their extroverted, intuitive nature can give them a real knack for marketing strategy and CRM, while their thinking and judging characteristics will make them work til death for the success of their enterprise. In marketing, half of it goes to hard work and persistence, right?
Jung called feeling and thinking types “rational” because they are characterized by the dominance of judging functions that provide reasoning rationale (be it thinking or feeling). “Rational” or Judging preference results in thinking, feelings, response and behaviour that consciously operate in line with certain rules, principles or norms. People with dominant “rational” or judging preference perceive the world as an ordered structure that follows a set of rules.

ESTJs have a special appreciation for tradition and order, which doesn’t subside even when on vacay. Providence gets them: Federal Hill is rich with Italian tradition and the city loves its traditional coffee milk (coffee-flavored syrup + milk). But even more, this personality type will be marveled by how volunteers orchestrate WaterFire, a multi-sensory festival that happens every couple weeks in the summer and occasionally other times throughout the year. Dressed in black to blend in with the night, kayakers help stoke the flames of braziers that are planted throughout rivers winding through the downtown. Fires flicker on the water and opera music plays for the elevated festival.
