Half way through the first post, which was written by Mellissah herself, I stopped for a brief moment and thought to myself: ‘Hang on, this sounds rather familiar… This sounds A LOT like something I would write.’ Like Mellissah, I had always envisioned myself as an entrepreneur because I enjoyed the idea of working for something I believed in, which was a difficult standard to meet if you worked for someone else or another company. I was able to relate to Mellissah’s posts on a personal level, which was something I had not expected from a marketing blog. I only learned later that we owned the same pair of Tiffany & Co. glasses!

Some academic psychologists have criticized the MBTI instrument, claiming that it “lacks convincing validity data”.[5][6][7][8] Proponents of the test, however, cite reports of individual behavior[9] and have found that the indicator meets or exceeds the reliability of other psychological instruments.[10] Some studies have found strong support for construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability, although variation was observed.[11][12][13]

The second half of the book moves from their home to these institutions of personality testing—and there were some really fascinating archives I got to dive into. One of the chapters of the book is called “The House Party Approach to Testing,” and it tells the story of how, in the late 50s, the psychologist named Donald MacKinnon bought a fraternity house in Berkeley, and he would have people come live in it for very long weekends and he would do personality assessments of them. At one point he got really interested in figuring out what made for a creative type of person. So he got all of these creative writers to come live at this house for a long weekend. These writers included Truman Capote, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and Norman Mailer—every major writer in Cold War America came to live in that house. And it was like a proto-Real World. They were living in this house where MacKinnon was putting them in situations of stress to see how they’d react to one another.

España The definitive guide to transforming the writing of individuals and teams Eternal Rose When we measure many human characteristics — like height, weight, intelligence, and many personality traits – we tend to find that most people fall fairly close to the average and very few people fall at the extremes, forming what is known as a bell curve or normal distribution. What would happen if we choose to represent intelligence as an arbitrary dichotomy – “sophisticated-simple” (“S-I”, because they clearly can’t both be represented by “S”) — rather than as a continuous IQ score? If the average person (who sits around the middle of the distribution, near the arbitrary dividing line) took an intelligence test twice, they’d have a good chance of falling into a different category each time.

If you think your leg is broken, you can be more confident when two different radiologists diagnose a fracture. In personality testing, reliability means getting consistent results over time, or similar scores when rated by multiple people who know me well. As my inconsistent scores foreshadowed, the MBTI does poorly on reliability. Research shows “that as many as three-quarters of test takers achieve a different personality type when tested again,” writes Annie Murphy Paul in The Cult of Personality Testing, “and the sixteen distinctive types described by the Myers-Briggs have no scientific basis whatsoever.” In a recent article, Roman Krznaric adds that “if you retake the test after only a five-week gap, there’s around a 50 percent chance that you will fall into a different personality category.”

If you’ve ever been on a dating app, you know what the Myers-Briggs personality type is—those four letters that are supposed to unlock the secrets of your inner personality and guide you through everything from your career to your interpersonal relationships. There’s (E) and (I) for extraversion or introversion, (N) and (S) for intuition or sensing, (T) and (F) for thinking or feeling, and (J) and (P) for judging or perceiving. This four-letter classification is hard to avoid. Some companies use it as a management tool, individuals use it to judge their Tinder dates, Redditors even obsess over it in subreddits dedicated to each type.
there are notably little data to support the The fourth criterion, Judging – Perceiving, reflects how a person implements the information he or she has processed. Judging means that a person organizes all of his life events and, as a rule, sticks to his plans. Perceiving means that he or she is inclined to improvise and explore alternative options.
ENTPs are the idea-chasers of the Myers-Briggs. You want to do a thousand things, often at the same time, but frequently end up not completing what you started (whoops). Although you need space to roam and freedom to explore, it’s essential to surround yourself with one or two close friends who encourage you to focus, to live out a single project and explore within its boundaries, and to finish what you started before starting something new. People who lend you the perspective and insight to hone your end goal will ultimately help you achieve more so you’re checking off boxes instead of just getting really close but failing to cross the finish line.

Rather, she knew she had to find a way to reconcile the woman’s inconsistency with her indicator. She was hopeful, Isabel told Hay, that this act of crossing over meant that the indicator did more than passively reflect the true self; it provoked the emergence of a better self from within the mind’s cocoon of uncertainty and self-hatred, preserving modes of perception (like sensing) and judgement (like feeling) that society had debased as undesirable — inefficient, weak, feminine. “The revelation, the discovery, is a discovery of value in the undervalued, in the part of her psyche which she and others have undervalued,” Isabel concluded.

Now, if you’re an MBTI fan, you might say it’s typical of an INTJ to turn to science. Touche. But regardless of your type, it’s hard to argue with the idea that if we’re going to divide people into categories, those categories ought to be meaningful. In social science, we use four standards: are the categories reliable, valid, independent, and comprehensive? For the MBTI, the evidence says not very, no, no, and not really.

She also associates the MBTI with mid-century schemes to organize and manipulate people by reducing them to numbers. The Scholastic Aptitude Test, first widely administered by the Educational Testing Service, is a classic example. The SAT-1 is essentially an I.Q. test: it translates individual mental ability into a pair of numbers that can have life-defining consequences. In fact, in the late nineteen-fifties and early nineteen-sixties, Myers worked closely with the E.T.S., whose director, Henry Chauncey, a people-sorting fanatic, wanted to get the company into what he called “non-cognitive” areas of assessment.
The attributes extroversion (E) and introversion (I) are designed to indicate whether a participant derives his or her mental energy primarily from other people or from within. Similarly, the attributes sensing (S) and intuiting (N) explain whether a participant absorbs information best through data and details or through general patterns. The attributes thinking (T) and feeling (F) show whether a participant tends to make decisions based on logic and objective criteria or based on emotional intelligence. Finally, the attributes judging (J) and perceiving (P) indicate whether a participant makes decisions quickly or prefers to take a more casual approach and leave his or her options open.

The interaction of two, three, or four preferences is known as type dynamics. Although type dynamics has garnered little or no empirical support to substantiate its viability as a scientific theory,[30] Myers and Briggs asserted that for each of the 16 four-preference types, one function is the most dominant and is likely to be evident earliest in life. A secondary or auxiliary function typically becomes more evident (differentiated) during teenage years and provides balance to the dominant. In normal development, individuals tend to become more fluent with a third, tertiary function during mid life, while the fourth, inferior function remains least consciously developed. The inferior function is often considered to be more associated with the unconscious, being most evident in situations such as high stress (sometimes referred to as being in the grip of the inferior function).

New to Twitter? The deeper story, Emre found, began with Katharine Cook Briggs who became besotted with the ideas of Carl Jung, the Swiss psychoanalyst. When her daughter Isabel was born in 1897, she turned their living room into a “cosmic laboratory of baby training”, conducting experiments and drills that would eventually form the basis of a notebook called The Diary of an Obedience-Curiosity Mother. Katharine was responsible for the A-or-B question format, but her main concern was in finding out what conditions best allowed children to develop into “civilised adults”. Decades later, Isabel realised that an adapted questionnaire could become a “people sorting device”, one that could easily be transposed from children to organising a workforce.

Most of us vary in these traits over time — depending on our mood when we take the test, for instance, we may or may not think that we sympathize with people. But the test simply tells us whether we’re “thinking” or “feeling” based on how we answered a handful of binary questions, with no room in between.

And as skeptical as I am about putting people in boxes, this distinction felt true in this scenario.
ESTJ Jung also discovered two types of perceiving (sensing and intuition) and two types of judgment (thinking and feeling). Perceiving is how we accumulate information, and judgment is how we make decisions. His theory is the main idea of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Instrument (MBTI), which is used in the business world for career counseling, developing management styles, team building and conflict management. The MBTI helps explain individual differences and can aid businesses in developing and shaping their employees.

They tend to prioritize introspection and dreaming, and oftentimes feel like they do not belong or live in the real world. Both Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine were fascinated by Jung’s theory of psychological types and recognized that the theory could have real world applications. During World War II, Myers and Briggs began researching and developing an indicator that could be utilized to help understand individual differences. By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier lives.

Just because psychometrics doesn’t work very well yet, though, is no reason not to take its menace seriously. When Isabel Myers first started selling individual copies of the MBTI, she scored the results by hand. Now, online test-takers get a summary of their outline spat into their inbox after a few clicks. While Myers-Briggs fans continue to champion the test as a valuable self-exploratory tool, it is necessary to remember that the MBTI was meant as a helpmate for the powerful from its beginning. It didn’t get co-opted by corporations, it was concocted for them, selling what Emre calls the “fantasy of rational organization of labor.” While “know thyself” is still an alluring directive, when it comes to personality testing, it is increasingly important to scrutinize who else might be trying to know the answer.

Jung’s interest in typology grew from his desire to reconcile the theories of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, and to define how his own perspective differed from theirs. Jung wrote, “In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one’s psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person’s judgment.” (Jung, [1961] 1989:207) He concluded that Freud’s theory was extraverted and Adler’s introverted. (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 91) Jung became convinced that acrimony between the Adlerian and Freudian camps was due to this unrecognized existence of different fundamental psychological attitudes, which led Jung “to conceive the two controversial theories of neurosis as manifestations of a type-antagonism.” (Jung, 1966: par. 64)

A comprehensive test assesses the major categories that exist. One of the key elements missing from the MBTI is what personality psychologists call emotional stability versus reactivity — the tendency to stay calm and collected under stress or pressure. This turns out to be one of the most important predictors of individual and group patterns of thought, feeling, and action, so it’s an unfortunate oversight. As another example, the judging-perceiving scale captures whether I’m an organizer and a planner, but overlooks the industriousness and achievement drive that tend to accompany these characteristics — together, they form a personality trait called conscientiousness. As personality psychologists Robert McCrae and Paul Costa sum it up, “the MBTI does not give comprehensive information on the four domains it does sample.”

Scoring 10% on O simply means you very much prefer traditional, familiar experiences, while 90% means you’re very open to new experiences – neither good, nor bad, neither beneficial, nor harmful.

Human civilisation has, from time to time, entertained itself by sorting human beings into separate innate character types. Much of the pleasure of this seems to come from analysing external indicators which individuals will be quite unaware of. Aristotle’s pupil Theophrastus wrote a set of characters which have been periodically imitated ever since, letting us know that a boor will wear a cloak that is too short, and then sit down in it.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is simple, a 93-question forced-choice test, loosely based on personality types outlined by Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung in his 1921 book Psychological Types. The MBTI splits people into four dichotomies: introverted (I) or extroverted (E); intuitive (N) or sensory (S); thinking (T) or feeling (F); judging (J) or perceiving (P). An ENTJ is meant to be a sociable, rational high achiever, while an ISFP is supposed to be supportive and practical. According to Myers, these types were the key to revolutionizing industry. Buzz Blog Emre’s book revels in the peculiar dispositions of the creators of Myers-Briggs as a way of undermining and complicating their project. The Personality Brokers is a unique meld of a hidden history of two admirably prickly women and an examination of why their ideas were simultaneously damaging and popular. While Emre excavated archival documents to piece together the story of Myers and Briggs, she also ventured into the modern world of their devotees. Emre attended MBTI training sessions, and she recounts how happy Myers-Briggs made some of her fellow attendees. “I witnessed flashes of epiphany that were not, in any sense, untrue; I saw things fall into place for people,” Emre writes. One attendee told her after the seminar that it had “given her the confidence to start looking for new jobs.”
Recently viewed Intuitive people seek out patterns and relationships among the facts they have gathered. They trust hunches and their intuition and look for the “big picture.” The quintessential intuitive was Albert Einstein whose fanciful thought experiments revolutionized the 20th century. He could see patterns where others saw randomness or chaos.
