Our Story One of the more influential ideas originated in the theoretical work of Carl Jung as published in the book Psychological Types. The original German language edition, Psychologische Typen, was first published by Rascher Verlag, Zurich, in 1921.[12] Typologies such as Socionics, the MBTI assessment, and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter have roots in Jungian theory.[13][14]

In an earlier version of the MBTI, Lesson Summary Systematic personality testing, though, is a twentieth-century thing. Annie Murphy Paul considers the Rorschach test, which was created in 1921, the first such device. In the case of the MBTI, three of the four binaries that the test uses were derived from Carl Jung’s book “Psychological Types,” also published in 1921. (Briggs had developed her own categories, but after reading Jung’s book she swapped out her terms for his. She also seems to have developed a long-distance crush and become a kind of Jung groupie.) The E.T.S. opened in 1947. By then, there were hundreds of personality tests on the market and hundreds of psychology consulting firms in business to administer them. According to Whyte, by 1952 a third of American companies were using personality tests.

Read on Apple News More Tests » Emre wants to give the MBTI her most sympathetic attention, but, in the end, she calls the test “among the silliest, shallowest products of late capitalism.” The sympathy comes, she explains, from relating, as a mother, to two women’s earnest attempt to extrapolate a theory of personality from their domestic observations. The dismissiveness comes partly from having been stonewalled by the Myers-Briggs people, and partly from distrust of the whole idea of tests and types and human-sorting. She also doesn’t like the idea that people should have to commodify their personal traits in order to find work.
The use of the Myers-Briggs is controversial, as research suggests that types don’t correlate well with job satisfaction or abilities.

No major journal has published research on the MBTI, which academics consider a strong repudiation of the test’s authority. What makes this even more striking is that CPP has three prominent psychologists on its corporate board — Carl Thoresen, Wayne Cascio and Christina Maslach — who presumably could have used their stature in the field to help.

All the while, she refused to compromise on how her test worked, wore dresses with tennis shoes, and regularly chugged a homemade concoction of brewer’s yeast, milk, and melted Hershey chocolate bars she called “tiger’s milk.” She did not believe in feminism. She believed fervently in capitalism. Many colleagues despised her, calling her that “horrible woman.” If anyone deserves the label of a true iconoclast, Briggs does, something that Emre recognizes. “At many points in writing this book, I wanted it to be a feminist triumph,” Emre writes in The Personality Brokers’ introduction, noting that both Katharine’s and Isabel’s personal histories as intelligent homemakers striving to self-actualize by bringing their project to the world were both sympathetic and compelling. And yet, their life’s work aimed to distill personalities into a simple formula. The mission of these oddball trailblazers was a peace achieved by slotting others onto well-established and immutable tracks.

“I found out first that it had been designed by two women, which I found fascinating because, like many of my readers, I’d always assumed it was two men,” says Emre. She made contact with the Myers & Briggs Foundation to see if she could gain access to the archives of Isabel Briggs Myers, the daughter, who had died in 1980. For almost a year, the foundation made her jump through hoops: she had lunch with the vice president in New York; she spent $2,095 on a week-long certification programme that made her qualified to administer the MBTI. But eventually, a librarian told her that the foundation would never allow her access to the papers.

It occurred to me that Mellissah and I had rather similar personalities – both perfectionists, visionaries, intuitive, idealistic and determined. Of course similar people would be attracted to the same jobs. That was expected. What I hadn’t expected was to experience this first-hand. It had made me question my individuality, but more importantly, meeting Mel helped me confirm that marketing was an achievable career choice for me.

Faculty should teach their students how to chunk, or group and interconnect, knowledge. Introverted students will appreciate it, extraverted students may not. Nevertheless, cognitive psychologists tell us that through chunking, students master the material. We recommend that faculty teach students how to build a compare/ contrast table, flowchart, or concept map.
These individuals also tend to be attracted to career paths that offer a lot of flexibility and freedom where their creative expression can manifest itself on their terms, Bollag says. “This is why you find that a lot of INFP’s go into fields like music, arts, and creative writing,” he explains. “Unfortunately for income statistics, there is a very good reason why we use the term ‘starving artists’ and the few examples of famous artists, novelists, and musicians that make it big are a very small percentage of the population.”

All four of the categories in the Myers-Briggs suffer from these kinds of problems, and psychologists say they aren’t an effective way of distinguishing between different personality types. “Contemporary social scientists are rarely studying things like whether you make decisions based on feelings or rational calculus — because all of us use both of these,” Grant says. “These categories all create dichotomies, but the characteristics on either end are either independent from each other, or sometimes even go hand in hand.” Even data from the Myers-Briggs test itself shows that most people are somewhere in the middle for any one category, and just end up being pigeonholed into one or the other.

  3. One study reports that the MBTI dichotomies exhibit good split-half reliability; however, the dichotomy scores are distributed in a bell curve, and the overall type allocations are less reliable. Also, test-retest reliability is sensitive to the time between tests. Within each dichotomy scale, as measured on Form G, about 83% of categorizations remain the same when individuals are retested within nine months, and around 75% when individuals are retested after nine months. About 50% of people tested within nine months remain the same overall type, and 36% remain the same type after more than nine months.[40] For Form M (the most current form of the MBTI instrument), the MBTI Manual reports that these scores are higher (p. 163, Table 8.6).

After Carl Jung’s book Psychological Types was published in 1923, Briggs recognized that her theory was similar to Jung’s, but not nearly as developed. She and Myers studied Jung’s work extensively and published articles based on his theories before turning their efforts toward putting the psychological types to practical use.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a Jungian-oriented, self-report inventory which categorizes people into dichotomous categories along each of four dimensions: extraversion-introversion, sensation-intuition, thinking-feeling, and judgment-perception. The theory underlying this inventory, as well as relevant Jungian theory, the way that the Indicator was constructed, and intercorrelational, reliability, and validity studies are described and discussed in terms of their bearing on the correspondence between the topology formulated by Jung and Myers’ version of it, and extent to which the Indicator actually reflects Myers’ topology, the utility of the Indicator in predicting important variables, and any unique and potentially useful properties of the Indicator. In addition, a lengthy appendix includes 59 tables and several graphs presenting data and correlations on the Indicator. Normative data are presented for several different groups as an aid to interpretation of Indicator type classifications and continuous scores. These tested groups are: 1) high school students; 2) male liberal arts college students; 3) male engineering school students; 4) service academy students; 5) Long Island University male and female students; 6) divinity school students; 7) industrial administration students; 8) recent college graduate appointees hired by Westinghouse; and 9) public elementary school teachers.
