  1. Ok, so MBTI was developed during World War II by two housewives (not psychologists or scientists) who were interested in the works of Carl Jung and developed the test based on Jung’s theories.

Merve Emre, an associate professor of English at Oxford, addresses this tension in her forthcoming book The Personality Brokers, which traces the lives of the two women who created the test—the mother-daughter pair of Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. In recounting their lives, she examines how a methodology created from studying their husbands and children blossomed into one of the largest pseudoscientific personality testing models in history.

My favorite quizzes are the ones where you click through a bunch of commodities—what Disney movie are you, what type of shoe are you—and then it uses all of those inputs to create another commodity as an output. Like, if you pick this kind of shoe, you’re this kind of Taylor Swift song. To me that’s a really amusing amusing exposé of how type works and has always worked. It’s used to commodify people’s psyches to transform them into commodities that can then be sold on the personality marketplace. So I actually think millennials are much more keyed into how that has become an invisible feature of their lives than any other generation.

But the problem with that idea is the fact that the test is notoriously inconsistent. Research has found that as many as 50 percent of people arrive at a different result the second time they take a test, even if it’s just five weeks later.

The whole point of the article was to show that MBTI has faults that make it less of a scientific method and more akin to a horoscope. I agree that it’s possible to organize people into 16 broad categories that share some common traits, even if they’re unique in other aspects, but as the article stated MBTI’s categories aren’t very good, as they do not meet the criteria you would expect of a scientific test, as such it becomes a lot less meaningful to divide people into those particular categories.
But as a result, darkly experience: criticalness, over-analysis, accusation, seeing others as being irrational or illogical, cold or steely communication, an urge to: hurt, provoke, or “dump on” others, lay guilt trips; may imagine detailed, seemingly logical but convoluted “backstories” to explain to yourself what is wrong with other people.
