That was a decade ago. Today, Emre is a 33-year-old associate professor of English at the University of Oxford. She has swapped the corporate world for a cosy, book-lined office just off the main quadrangle of Worcester College. She has given up unlimited bagels and barista coffee for Nicholas Hawksmoor-designed buildings and award-winning gardens that have their own blog. This afternoon, as the sun shines and windfall pears dot the orchard floor, it doesn’t seem like a terrible trade.
Thinking and feeling are the decision-making (judging) functions. The thinking and feeling functions are both used to make rational decisions, based on the data received from their information-gathering functions (sensing or intuition). Those who prefer thinking tend to decide things from a more detached standpoint, measuring the decision by what seems reasonable, logical, causal, consistent and matching a given set of rules. Those who prefer feeling tend to come to decisions by associating or empathizing with the situation, looking at it ‘from the inside’ and weighing the situation to achieve, on balance, the greatest harmony, consensus and fit, considering the needs of the people involved.

INTJs, as introverts, are quiet, reserved, and comfortable being alone. They are usually self-sufficient and would rather work alone than in a group. Socializing drains an introvert’s energy, causing them to need to recharge. INTJs are interested in ideas and theories. When observing the world they are always questioning why things happen the way they do. They excel at developing plans and strategies, and don’t like uncertainty.

Throughout the 1950s – 1970s, Myers presented her data and personality sorting method to a variety of educational institutions, publications, and psychologists. In 1962, she wrote Introduction to Type, a short but comprehensive educational book that is still in print. By the time of Isabel’s death in 1980, their test was being widely used by organizations to improve employee interaction, career counseling, and many others who wanted to improve personal relationships.
Thinking and feeling functions are rational, while sensation and intuition are nonrational. According to Jung, rationality consists of figurative thoughts, feelings or actions with reason — a point of view based on objective value, which is set by practical experience. Nonrationality is not based in reason. Jung notes that elementary facts are also nonrational, not because they are illogical but because, as thoughts, they are not judgments.

Overall, some overlap in MBTI type may help ease the way, but before you narrow your search to the “best” type match for you, remember that mutual respect, good communication, common interests, and a strong friendship are still the best predictors of a successful relationship.
Could the woman have falsified her type? Could she have cheated on a test with no right or wrong answers? In his 1956 book, The Organization Man, sociologist William H. Whyte provided his readers with a handy appendix titled “How to Cheat on Personality Tests,” which encourages test takers to do just that. Its tone is ruthless, pragmatic, and deeply funny, provided one shares Whyte’s belief that the more a test insists that it is “for the individual” — that it promotes objective self-discovery, that it “encourages difference, not conformity” — the more it masks the “total integration of the individual” within the organization’s social ethos. “The tests, essentially, are loyalty tests, or rather tests of potential loyalty,” Whyte argues. “Neither in the questions nor in the evaluation of them are the tests neutral; they are loaded with values, organization values, and the result is a set of yardsticks that reward the conformist, the pedestrian, the unimaginative — at the expense of the exceptional individual without whom no society, organization or otherwise, can flourish.”
