She refers to Stanley Milgram (of the “obedience to authority” experiment) and Philip Zimbardo (of the Stanford prison experiment), to remind us that scientistic nomenclature can shape behavior in troubling ways. She refers to William Whyte’s “The Organization Man,” published in 1956, as a way of associating the MBTI with a postwar culture of conformity. (Like a lot of people, she mistakenly calls Whyte a sociologist. Whyte was a magazine writer; he worked at Fortune. He was no more a social scientist than Briggs and Myers were.)

Digital It’d be one thing if there were good empirical reasons for these strange binary choices that don’t seem to describe the reality we know. But they come from the disregarded theories of an early-20th-century thinker who believed in things like ESP and the collective unconscious.

Essential Reads Not everyone is so enamoured. One former McKinsey executive says he was unimpressed with its findings. Unable to speak of this heresy, he chose to use his colleagues’ faith in MBTI to his advantage. Despite being labelled an “E”, the associate told his workmates he was an “I”. It was the perfect excuse to avoid after-work dinners, plug his headphones in at the office or leave for the gym at a reasonable hour. “I could always just say, Hey guys, sorry, I’m an ‘I’,” he recalls, laughing. “That’s a totally reasonable excuse at McKinsey.”

The format of the book is more or less like a text-book. Absence of visual aids and long, complicated sentence structures makes it a little bit difficult to read..

I think Isabel Briggs Myers would also be quite disappointed and I think she would have felt quite sad by how people can just take knock-off versions of it online, how quizzes like BuzzFeed quizzes basically parody the logic of type, by asking you “Which Taylor Swift song reveals something about which Friends character you might be.” And I think she would be quite disappointed by how loosely and in what an unregulated fashion the indicator was allowed to circulate.

ESTPs have an Extraverted, Sensing, Thinking, and Perceptive personality. ESTPs are governed by the need for social interaction, feelings and emotions, logical processes and reasoning, along with a need for freedom. Theory and abstracts don’t keep ESTP’s interested for long. ESTPs leap before they look, fixing their mistakes as they go, rather than sitting idle or preparing contingency plans.

Contrary to stereotype, ENTJs get sensitive, not critical — about themselves, not others. (Though ENFJs do get angry / critical about others.) Neither gives two shits about “best practices,” “processes,” or deliberately “brainstorming new ideas” to “make a change,” and certainly don’t while trying to fix a low point.
