People-sorting is what educational systems do. The process is much more fine-grained than a ninety-three-item questionnaire, but that’s why college is so expensive. It provides employers with a dossier that sums up a graduate’s aptitude and potential in a few pages and numbers, with two or three Latin words maybe added on.
These findings led McCrae and Costa, the formulators of the Five Factor Theory,[31] to conclude, “correlational analyses showed that the four MBTI indices did measure aspects of four of the five major dimensions of normal personality. The five-factor model provides an alternative basis for interpreting MBTI findings within a broader, more commonly shared conceptual framework.” However, “there was no support for the view that the MBTI measures truly dichotomous preferences or qualitatively distinct types, instead, the instrument measures four relatively independent dimensions.”

But when I took the test a few months later, I was an ESFP. Suddenly, I had become the life of the party, the guy who follows his heart and throws caution to the wind. Had my personality changed, or is this test not all it’s cracked up to be? I began to read through the evidence, and I found that the MBTI is about as useful as a polygraph for detecting lies. One researcher even called it an “act of irresponsible armchair philosophy.” When it comes to accuracy, if you put a horoscope on one end and a heart monitor on the other, the MBTI falls about halfway in between.

John Beebe, a Jungian Psychologist and Psychotherapist, uses his own decades of experience and that of other Jungian Psychologists to provide a much richer way of understanding how cognitive functions operate in us. He uses seminal ideas of Carl Jung such as the nature of unconscious and its interaction with consciousness, the powerful role of archetypes in psyche to show the dynamics of function interactions within each of us and between people. All his insight culminate into a 8 function model for each MBTI type with each function serving the role of an archetype such as Hero, Parent, Eternal Child, Completing Force, Critical Parent, Trickster Child and Demon. Individuals who prefer the sensation function are more likely to trust information that is in the present, tangible and concrete: that is, information that can be understood by the five senses. They tend to distrust hunches, which seem to come “out of nowhere”.[15]:2 They prefer to look for details and facts. For them, the meaning is in the data. On the other hand, those who prefer the intuition function tend to trust information that is more abstract or theoretical, that can be associated with other information (either remembered or discovered by seeking a wider context or pattern). By the mid-1950s, Isabel’s clients were the largest utilities and insurance companies in the United States. They regularly spent upwards of $50 a year on test booklets and answer sheets. The Home Life Insurance Company of New York purchased it twice—first to determine whether an applicant would make for a successful life insurance salesman, and then to calculate whether a life insurance applicant should pay a larger premium on his insurance. (According to Isabel’s summary of her results, extraverted intuitive types — ENTPs and ENFPs — were more likely to exhibit risk-taking behavior.) General Electric asked Isabel to type their highest-ranking executives to develop a theory about the contributions of a man’s type to his managerial success. “Under all the shifting problems that cross an executive’s desk lie three basic necessities,” Isabel wrote:

Why does the MBTI remain so popular in spite of these problems? Murphy Paul argues that people cling to the test for two major reasons. One is that thousands of people have invested time and money in becoming MBTI-certified trainers and coaches. As I wrote over the summer, it’s awfully hard to let go of our big commitments. The other is the “aha” moment that people experience when the test gives them insight about others — and especially themselves. “Those who love type,” Murphy Paul writes, “have been seduced by an image of their own ideal self.” Once that occurs, personality psychologist Brian Little says, raising doubts about “reliability and validity is like commenting on the tastiness of communion wine. You will however find that some professions will have a higher number of one type because those skills lend themselves to what is expected from them. Statistically you should have a few P’s in the mix. I think that the problem with P or perception is that people do not understand how this attitude works. It’s a shame as it’s the P’s who offer creative insights because they are not in such a hurry to bring things to closure.

Hidden Letters of Personality Type The second half of the book moves from their home to these institutions of personality testing—and there were some really fascinating archives I got to dive into. One of the chapters of the book is called “The House Party Approach to Testing,” and it tells the story of how, in the late 50s, the psychologist named Donald MacKinnon bought a fraternity house in Berkeley, and he would have people come live in it for very long weekends and he would do personality assessments of them. At one point he got really interested in figuring out what made for a creative type of person. So he got all of these creative writers to come live at this house for a long weekend. These writers included Truman Capote, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, and Norman Mailer—every major writer in Cold War America came to live in that house. And it was like a proto-Real World. They were living in this house where MacKinnon was putting them in situations of stress to see how they’d react to one another.

Just My Type is a book of stories about fonts. It examines how Helvetica and Comic Sans took over the world. It explains why we are still influenced by type choices made more than 500 years ago, and why the T in the Beatles logo is longer than the other letters. It profiles the great originators of type, from Baskerville to Zapf, as well as people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook. The book is about that pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset and were loaded onto computers, and typefaces became something we realized we all have an opinion about. And beyond all this, the book reveals what may be the very best and worst fonts in the world – and what your choice of font says about you.
This work is so important to understanding and working with people. I was disappointed by the disorganization and confusing read of the themes in the text. Another editi0on is warranted ASAP.

Personality and work According to Carl G. Jung’s theory of psychological types [Jung, 1971], people can be characterized by their preference of general attitude:
• Hugely entertaining … a lively history … My considerable enjoyment of this book may have been enhanced by the fact that I’ve always been very interested in print design. External links[edit] Jung theorized that the dominant function acts alone in its preferred world: exterior for the extraverts, and interior for the introverts. The remaining three functions, he suggested, operate together in the opposite world. If the dominant cognitive function is introverted, the other functions are extraverted, and vice versa. The MBTI Manual summarizes references in Jung’s work to the balance in psychological type as follows:

Psychotherapy 101 I II III IV Proponents of MBTI see the testing system as a valuable aid to personal development and growth. But critics of MBTI argue that its personality profiles are so broad and ambiguous that they can be interpreted to fit almost anyone. Some also worry that, once a university career counselor or employer knows a person’s “type,” that person might tend to be pigeonholed or pushed in a certain direction regardless of his or her desires. Criticism based on “confirmation bias,” namely that people tend to behave in ways that are predicted for them, has been offered but runs counter to experience. This critique asserts that a person who learns that he or she is “outgoing,” according to MBTI, will be more likely to behave that way. Temperaments, however, are not that easily influenced by “hear-say”: shy people labeled outgoing won’t take fire; and schmoozers labeled shy will just continue to babble and hug on.
With over 2 million users each year, the MBTI instrument continues to be the gold standard of assessments, and the leading choice of businesses – including most of the Fortune 500 – for developing a high-performance workforce. You can be an I with a penchant for presenting in front of groups. If you are a mid zone I, you could easily cross over into the E zone. Finally, it’s about innate preference. Finally, the problems with this trade-off are significant—and hopefully obvious. Most important,  the comforting illusion of being able to control the emotional weather is just that, an illusion. And it works well enough for most conditions. But watch out when there is an organizational hurricane or drought,  some other unexpected condition or even just time moving on. When everything falls apart, leadership may regret having used the MBTI to hide from the messy human complexities of organizational life. Obviously, when problems are ignored they are not solved; when inevitable conflicts are ignored they are not managed. And the MBTI is so popular because it provides the illusion of solution when, in reality, the problems and conflicts remains as real as ever.

MBTI Overview HIST PSYCHOL Breakdown: Murder Below the Gnat Line In Post-Truth, McIntyre describes an epochal change triggered by the mainstreaming of postmodernist thought and particularly shameless actors. What the popularity of the MBTI, the phenomenon in Bunk, and the general difficulty with disseminating accurate facts in the public discourse seems to demonstrate is a change in degree instead of a change in type. As the media stratifies and the velocity with which we do things accelerates, lies become easier to distribute and harder to refute. Alongside that, people search for quicker ways to express to the people around them who they are and what they’re all about. – Michelle Phan, YouTube Beauty Guru & Entrepreneur The purpose of learning about your personality type is to help you to understand yourself better. When you know what motivates and energizes you, it helps you to seek opportunities that most suit the way you are.
Jung introduced the idea of hierarchy and direction of psychological functions. According to Jung, one of the psychological functions – a function from either judging or perception pair – would be primary (also called dominant). In other words, one pole of the poles of the two dichotomies (Sensing-Feeling and Thinking-Feeling) dominates over the rest of the poles. The Extraversion-Introversion preference sets the direction of the dominant function: the direction points to the source of energy that feeds it – i.e. to the outer world for extraverts and to the inner world for introverts.
J, Judging – This group tends towards rapid decision making and subsequent tightening and finishing things to the end, plans activities to advance and almost always complete them Jung theorized that the dominant function acts alone in its preferred world: exterior for the extraverts, and interior for the introverts. The remaining three functions, he suggested, operate together in the opposite world. If the dominant cognitive function is introverted, the other functions are extraverted, and vice versa. The MBTI Manual summarizes references in Jung’s work to the balance in psychological type as follows:

For example, an article in the Harvard Business Review noted that people who fit into the category ISTP (introverted-sensing-thinking-perceiving) tend to be “cool onlookers—quiet, reserved, and analytical; usually interested in impersonal principles, how and why mechanical things work; flashes of original humor,” while people of type ENFJ (extroverted-intuiting-feeling-judging) are “sociable, popular; sensitive to praise and criticism; responsive and responsible; generally feel real concern for what others think or want.”

The questionnaires, developed by the research community over the decades, have between 44 and 300 questions. People voluntarily take the online quizzes, attracted by the opportunity to receive feedback about their own personality.
None of this is meant to pigeonhole people. We all have aspects of all these types within us. But most people have what psychologists call a “dominant style.” And, according to the Gita, all of these paths lead to the same place–a deep awareness of the infinite wonder of the universe.

The Big Five are far from perfect, and there’s growing support for a HEXACO model of personality that adds a sixth trait: honesty-humility. Right now, though, the biggest problem facing the Big Five is one of marketing. Most people prefer to be called agreeable than disagreeable—we need to repackage this trait as supportive versus challenging. I hope some of you will take up the challenge.
