You either hire someone or not—there is nothing in between. In all of these cases of making a decision—whether about someone else, or for yourself—you are forced to treat personality spectra as type categories.”

Even Jung was alarmed when Katharine abducted a disturbed 15-year-old girl and started ‘treating’ her. Isabel’s qualifications consisted in having written two terrible thrillers, the second of which, Give Me Death, is about a large white American family, members of which start committing suicide after their wedding night, having discovered they have ‘Negro blood’. Katharine started up a study group with some ladies of the neighbourhood, cataloguing their dreams on index cards (‘Phallus’, ‘Eczema’, ‘Nakedness’, ‘Garage’).

Unable to speak of this heresy, he chose to use his colleagues’ faith in MBTI to his advantage. Despite being labelled an “E”, the associate told his workmates he was an “I”. It was the perfect excuse to avoid after-work dinners, plug his headphones in at the office or leave for the gym at a reasonable hour. “I could always just say, Hey guys, sorry, I’m an ‘I’,” he recalls, laughing. “That’s a totally reasonable excuse at McKinsey.”

One can find fault with the MBTI, and no doubt with many personality-assessment mechanisms. But there is no escaping types. We freely diagnose people all the time—as extroverts or narcissists, as “on the spectrum” or (for example) “a little O.C.D.” We hardly know the clinical definitions of terms like these, but a lot of interpersonal relations are navigated with their assistance.

Thinking and feeling are the decision-making (judging) functions. The thinking and feeling functions are both used to make rational decisions, based on the data received from their information-gathering functions (sensing or intuition). Those who prefer thinking tend to decide things from a more detached standpoint, measuring the decision by what seems reasonable, logical, causal, consistent and matching a given set of rules. Those who prefer feeling tend to come to decisions by associating or empathizing with the situation, looking at it ‘from the inside’ and weighing the situation to achieve, on balance, the greatest harmony, consensus and fit, considering the needs of the people involved.

As men built bomb shelters and children practiced attack drills, Isabel picked up accounts, and these accounts began to double, even triple, in size. She took on large orders from colleges, government bureaus, and pharmaceutical companies; from Swarthmore, her alma mater; from her father’s longtime employer, the National Bureau of Standards; from the First National Bank of Boston, Bell Telephone, and the Roane-Anderson Company — a subcontractor for atomic weapons her father introduced Isabel to through his contacts on the Manhattan Project. She was not shy about asking for help or using her family’s connections.

The unusual tone of their relationship is captured by Katharine writing to her new son-in-law (a communist) on their wedding day, urging him to make love to Isabel that very evening ‘on the overnight train they would take from Washington DC to Memphis, Tennessee’. With Isabel’s education, ‘once the hope of the world’, now ‘an old, dead project’, Katharine sank into aimless depression. For Employers Review of Educational Research “Entertainer” When you receive your feedback report, whether from the Myers-Briggs or another source, avoid reading it as the ultimate truth. For that matter, never use any assessment or test result to select a single job to pursue. Life is far too complex for such reductionist mentality. Use it as a loose guide, a springboard for further exploration and discovery. The goal is to expand possibilities, not limit them. This might feel uncomfortable if you’re wrestling with a career direction. Remember that it’s OK to not have everything mapped out. Too much planning (or adhering too strictly to an assessment) could mean missing opportunities that arise out of happenstance or that are created when you combine your interests, experience, and education in unique ways.

Moreover, one of the central tenets of the instrument is that you can’t change your type: it is innate, fixed from birth. Yet the company that now publishes the MBTI concedes that half of subjects change at least one of their four types when they answer the questions a second time.

among employees. Indeed, McCaulley ad- Societies Why does the MBTI remain so popular in spite of these problems? Murphy Paul argues that people cling to the test for two major reasons. One is that thousands of people have invested time and money in becoming MBTI-certified trainers and coaches. As I wrote over the summer, it’s awfully hard to let go of our big commitments. The other is the “aha” moment that people experience when the test gives them insight about others—and especially themselves. “Those who love type,” Murphy Paul writes, “have been seduced by an image of their own ideal self.” Once that occurs, personality psychologist Brian Little says, raising doubts about “reliability and validity is like commenting on the tastiness of communion wine. Or how good a yarmulke is at protecting your head.”
“Annie Murphy Paul, a former senior editor for Psychology Today magazine, attacked the $400 million a year testing industry, comparing personality tests to phrenology — a popular and discredited 19th century personality instrument that measured mental traits by examining the 27 bumps on a person’s head.”[11]

Prediction: given the margin of error for ANY statistic, a great number of individuals will test slight preferences for ‘E’ or ‘I.’ When it comes to test-retest reliability, a “change” from ‘E’ to ‘I’ (or any of the other categories) is not necessarily evidence of an unreliable test. Saying you have a slight preference for introversion then later saying you have a slight preference for extroversion (which is what the test actually does) is different than saying “you are always an introvert” or “you are always an extrovert” which leads me to…

I’m fascinated with personality deciphering. I study all of them. With this one, I get INFJ almost every time but finally came across one that gave me my percentages. I’m barely the F portion which makes me also a INTJ. So I investigated that personality and I identify with it as well. Probably explains why I went into accounting even though every career aptitude test I’ve taken said counseling. Thinking I would have been more satisfied with my career choice if I had gone into counseling with a research emphasis haha!
“It makes you relax a bit, and realize that other types have the other side of the coin, which is not necessarily better—it has its strengths and drawbacks,” Sao says. “It is easy to get caught up in our assumptions about the world, but we do not realize that these assumptions are limited to how we are wired. Extraversion means “outward-turning” and introversion means “inward-turning.”[17] These specific definitions vary somewhat from the popular usage of the words.

Myers-Briggs resembles earlier stabs at personality divination, like the Woodworth Psychoneurotic Inventory, which was used to evaluate potential soldiers during World War I, and is often cited as the first widely used personality test. However, while the Woodworth was later reformulated for civilians, Myers-Briggs started off as a test for “normal” civilians, and was thus tailored toward “ordinary” people from the start. The sheep’s clothing was bespoke.
