E Another word of caution: Not everyone is a whole-hearted fan of the MBTI. There’s a camp of psychologists who believe the 16 different personality types aren’t a comprehensive, reliable determination of personality. Ideally, taking a psychological test one day and repeating it six or 12 months later should give pretty similar results, but that doesn’t always hold true with the MBTI.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a Jungian-oriented, self-report inventory which categorizes people into dichotomous categories along each of four dimensions: extraversion-introversion, sensation-intuition, thinking-feeling, and judgment-perception. The theory underlying this inventory, as well as relevant Jungian theory, the way that the Indicator was constructed, and intercorrelational, reliability, and validity studies are described and discussed in terms of their bearing on the correspondence between the topology formulated by Jung and Myers’ version of it, and extent to which the Indicator actually reflects Myers’ topology, the utility of the Indicator in predicting important variables, and any unique and potentially useful properties of the Indicator. In addition, a lengthy appendix includes 59 tables and several graphs presenting data and correlations on the Indicator. Normative data are presented for several different groups as an aid to interpretation of Indicator type classifications and continuous scores. These tested groups are: 1) high school students; 2) male liberal arts college students; 3) male engineering school students; 4) service academy students; 5) Long Island University male and female students; 6) divinity school students; 7) industrial administration students; 8) recent college graduate appointees hired by Westinghouse; and 9) public elementary school teachers. ENFPs are the hippies, the campaign throwers, the protesters – they are the ultimate supporters of a good cause. It’s no surprise that an ENFP will become a great marketer due to their enthusiasm in fighting for their beliefs. For this reason, they can be the best brand ambassadors for not-for-profit organisations, or whichever industries they are passionate about. ENFPs like to work on a grand scale; they like to believe that their business ventures are having an impact on greater social issues in the world. Their upbeat personalities, authentic enthusiasm and willpower to truly make a difference will take them very far in marketing, particularly in PR roles. They will be the ones you would want as a “face” for your company or brand.

If prospective employees should be honest, so should prospective employers. It’s BS to pretend honesty is only required on one side. You claim it’s all about personality, but what I’m pointing out is that none of it is personality, because the employer is attempting to weed out the employee without ever meeting them, by using some candy-assed, unscientific “personality quiz” written by a third party and founded on hot air. If they were asking questions about direct job skills, that would be relevant. They aren’t. They’re giving a person a lengthy and meaningless quiz and throwing people out based on someone’s interpretation of the quiz. The personality hasn’t even entered in yet. I have been hired from every job interview I’ve ever had. The problem is getting thrown out on some idiotic quiz without the opportunity of a meeting.

They regularly spent upwards of $50 a year on test booklets and answer sheets. The Home Life Insurance Company of New York purchased it twice—first to determine whether an applicant would make for a successful life insurance salesman, and then to calculate whether a life insurance applicant should pay a larger premium on his insurance. (According to Isabel’s summary of her results, extraverted intuitive types — ENTPs and ENFPs — were more likely to exhibit risk-taking behavior.) General Electric asked Isabel to type their highest-ranking executives to develop a theory about the contributions of a man’s type to his managerial success. “Under all the shifting problems that cross an executive’s desk lie three basic necessities,” Isabel wrote:

At first the test struggled for recognition. The role of eugenics in Nazi ideology made discussion of personality types controversial. Academics balked, seeing Jung as a mystic and Isabel’s questionnaire the result of untested armchair philosophy. She ignored the sceptics and sought commercial backers. The test she devised classifies people along four axes: introversion against extroversion; sensing against intuitive; thinking against feeling; and judging against perceiving. It supposes every person has a dominant preference within each pair, neatly allocating all humanity into one of 16 precise personality types.

ESFJs spend so much of their time channeling energy into those they love. And you love it. Being so selfless is an admirable quality, but you’re sort of willing to see the good in anyone, almost to your detriment. You frequently focus much of your time and effort on those who aren’t reciprocally invested in you. Becoming more discerning about who’s giving back to you in equal measure can really help you get the emotional support you need so your love tank isn’t on E. There are many possible reasons why the MBTI is so entrenched in workplaces and promoted so enthusiastically. There’s the expense and training involved, mentioned above. It may be because everyone uses it, so people conclude it must be reliable, and thus its success becomes self perpetuating. Also, any personality type you get assigned is invariably positive. There is no combination of answers you could give on the MBTI which says ‘you’re an arsehole’.

(Emre says that the office-furniture designer Herman Miller uses a modified version of the MBTI to create chairs and desks for different personalities.) In life, it means recognizing that we are naturally more likely to get along with some people than with others, and that when people aren’t communicating it can simply be because they are broadcasting on different frequencies. We need to get used to it.

Thinking/feeling: This scale explains how employees make decisions. A thinking type employee prefers to make decisions in a very objective and logical way. An employee who is feeling uses personal values to come up with a decision. Traditionally, males are usually found to be ‘thinking’ and females are ‘feeling.’ Thinking type employees can be impersonal and analyze issues, while feeling types sympathize and are considerate of decisions affecting people.

She made contact with the Myers & Briggs Foundation to see if she could gain access to the archives of Isabel Briggs Myers, the daughter, who had died in 1980. For almost a year, the foundation made her jump through hoops: she had lunch with the vice president in New York; she spent $2,095 on a week-long certification programme that made her qualified to administer the MBTI. But eventually, a librarian told her that the foundation would never allow her access to the papers.

Generally, we tend to favor our most developed dominant function, while we can broaden our personality by developing the others. Related to this, Jung noted that the unconscious often tends to reveal itself most easily through a person’s least developed inferior function. The encounter with the unconscious and development of the underdeveloped functions thus tend to progress together.

No single assessment (psychological, intelligence, personality, substance addiction, or forensic) will ever represent a person in their entirety. The assessment does not attempt to capture the intricacies of one’s religious upbringing, cultural or environmental influences, intelligence or ability, or even maturity in utilizing the preferences. The MBTI assessment is used to help a person understand their psychological preferences so that they can find ways to utilize their strengths, develop their areas of challenge, and create a lifestyle in which they may find more satisfaction.

It doesn’t say if or when scoring 90% E or 10% O is beneficial or harmful, so unless I’m misreading your comment, that is in no way value-laden. Scoring 10% on O simply means you very much prefer traditional, familiar experiences, while 90% means you’re very open to new experiences – neither good, nor bad, neither beneficial, nor harmful.

What is your personality type? Take the Test! Why does the MBTI remain so popular in spite of these problems? Murphy Paul argues that people cling to the test for two major reasons. One is that thousands of people have invested time and money in becoming MBTI-certified trainers and coaches. As I wrote over the summer, it’s awfully hard to let go of our big commitments. The other is the “aha” moment that people experience when the test gives them insight about others—and especially themselves. “Those who love type,” Murphy Paul writes, “have been seduced by an image of their own ideal self.” Once that occurs, personality psychologist Brian Little says, raising doubts about “reliability and validity is like commenting on the tastiness of communion wine. Or how good a yarmulke is at protecting your head.”
