Isabel was born in Washington just before the turn of the century and was home-schooled by her mother. Her father, Lyman Briggs, was a career federal worker who served for more than a decade as the director of the U.S. Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He also led President Franklin Roosevelt’s Uranium Committee, which explored the feasibility of an atomic bomb.

And it’s not easy to see how the different types correlate with different tasks. Here is how ENFPs (that is, people who are extroverted, intuitive, feeling, and perceiving) are described on the test’s official Web site, MBTIonline.com:
Skeptics criticize the terminology of the MBTI as being so “vague and general”[45] as to allow any kind of behavior to fit any personality type. They claim that this results in the Forer effect, where individuals give a high rating to a positive description that supposedly applies specifically to them.[25][33] Others argue that while the MBTI type descriptions are brief, they are also distinctive and precise.[46]:14-15 Some theorists, such as David Keirsey, have expanded on the MBTI descriptions, providing even greater detail. For instance, Keirsey’s descriptions of his four temperaments, which he correlated with the sixteen MBTI personality types, show how the temperaments differ in terms of language use, intellectual orientation, educational and vocational interests, social orientation, self image, personal values, social roles, and characteristic hand gestures.[46]:32-207

Is Myers Briggs Legit? Download citation They were a mother and daughter, Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. The story behind the Briggs-Myers tests proves an interesting one, and is told with considerable relish, vim and some savage comedy by Emre. Her previous book is Paraliterary: The Making of Bad Readers in Postwar America, which puts her on the right side of all sorts of arguments. Setting out on her research, she was assured by the university that holds the Myers papers that permission would never be granted. ‘The staff is very invested in protecting Isabel’s image,’ she was warned. Niall Ferguson only had to undertake a handwriting analysis before he was allowed to write the biography of the graphological obsessive Siegmund Warburg. Emre had to go on a $2,000 Myers-Briggs accreditation session. The experience, I suspect, contributed to the fizz of the final product.

The fictional MBWI, just like its namesake, is an either/or designation. You stand on the MBWI scale and it says your weight type is either obese (O) or anorectic (A). Can you imagine taking that seriously? Saying one’s weight is either obese (O) or anorectic (A) is not just lacking validity, it’s actually pretty absurd. And so too is the MBTI itself with its “four pairs of opposing preferences.” Personality traits just don’t fit the either/or structure of the MBTI any more than weight does. And like our absurd fictional example, it is absurd to say they do.

Library I have conducted a pseudo-scientific experiment armed with my new typographical knowledge, which involves looking at the door numbers on my neighbours’ houses. It’s quite surprising what we project into the world with these small choices. Number 8 has gone for a rustic look, suggesting a longing for a country life. Number 15 has opted for bold sans-serif numerals in stainless steel, screaming ‘I AM MODERN’ into the street. I still have the shabby brass 4, set in Times, that was on the house when I moved in. I wonder what that says about me.

Ohmann was on a quest to find a new religion to address the old capitalist problem of alienated labor: the estrangement of the worker’s psyche from the act of production. It was a quest he undertook not because he felt it was right in any moral or ethical sense, but because, as an executive, he felt he had no other choice if his company was to thrive. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which Ohmann purchased from Hay in 1949, offered him the perfect solution for preserving the “wholeness of personality” — a way of introducing people to their true selves and convincing them that the work they were doing was a natural extension of how God had created them. The fact that it might also help enhance productivity seemed, to Ohmann, the ideal marriage of “higher and more enduring spiritual values” to the material realities of work. In its primordial form, the idea of “work-life balance” was a bargain struck between God and mammon; a bargain brokered by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Ohmann informed Hay and Isabel.
Emotional Intelligence & Personality Type Modern medicine rejects this typology, but many new personality theories were developed from this ancient concept, often disguised under different names. Dr. Helen Fisher’s personality types — Explorer, Negotiator, Director, and Builder — bear a striking resemblance to Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Choleric, and Melancholic respectively. Having said that, this doesn’t minimize the value of her original research. Although Jung’s (or Myer Briggs personality types) were based on a completely different typing system, description of their 16 types is very similar to four basic types (four pure temperaments) and 12 mixed temperaments (see below).

ISTJs are always the first to step in and help, but usually the last to chase their own dreams. You usually know what you want and the necessary steps to get there, but the overwhelming reality of everything that might go wrong keeps you from going back to school, traveling to a remote country or investing in that big idea. You need people who see your capabilities clearly and talk up everything that might go right to counter the critical voices in your head. With those people, you’ll reach for more and have a support system whether you win or lose.
