During World War II, Myers and Briggs began researching and developing an indicator that could be utilized to help understand individual differences. By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier lives.

Astrology is used to predict the future, a feat that is virtually impossible. The Myers-Briggs type indicator, however, isn’t meant to predict anything. Yes, some people will try to use it as a means of divination, but these people simply aren’t using it for its intended purpose. MBTI is supposed to help people understand themselves and each other. I agree that it shouldn’t be used by employers looking for potential employees, and that it should never be used for discrimination, but you’re wrong to suggest that it’s useless. I hate to break it to you, but personality psychology is indeed a form of science. If you don’t consider deeper insight into the human personality as worthy of scientific merit, then I suppose nothing I say about it will change your mind. You shouldn’t, though, label those of us who value introspection as “willfully ignorant” or “maliciously evil”. I’m sorry you can’t get a regular job interview. That’s the employers’ fault.

Continuous Improvement The research that most psychologists today hold up as the best attempt to derive personality types from empirical data is called the Five Factor theory, which emerged from several large-scale independent projects that, conducted over decades, pointed to the same broad set of conclusions. The studies found five core axes that underpin personality, versus the MBTI’s four. They are represented by the acronym OCEAN: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Of the five, only extroversion closely maps with Myers-Briggs.

Consider an imaginary single-letter Myers-Briggs Weight Indicator. The fictional MBWI, just like its namesake, is an either/or designation. You stand on the MBWI scale and it says your weight type is either obese (O) or anorectic (A). Can you imagine taking that seriously? Saying one’s weight is either obese (O) or anorectic (A) is not just lacking validity, it’s actually pretty absurd. And so too is the MBTI itself with its “four pairs of opposing preferences.” Personality traits just don’t fit the either/or structure of the MBTI any more than weight does. And like our absurd fictional example, it is absurd to say they do.

Quote The Ceej Mobile The 16 personality types were created by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs as a way to categorize an individual according to their preferred way of thinking and behaving. Each personality type is designated with a four-letter code, like INFP or ESTJ, which is an acronym for the four key dimensions of personality.
The Step I framework is based around four dimensions of personality. Within each dimension, personality will fall into one or other of two dichotomies:

Quantity Add to basket – MBTI Certification Program Survey conducted by Psychometrics Canada, 2015 They were a mother and daughter, Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers. The story behind the Briggs-Myers tests proves an interesting one, and is told with considerable relish, vim and some savage comedy by Emre. Her previous book is Paraliterary: The Making of Bad Readers in Postwar America, which puts her on the right side of all sorts of arguments. Setting out on her research, she was assured by the university that holds the Myers papers that permission would never be granted. ‘The staff is very invested in protecting Isabel’s image,’ she was warned. Niall Ferguson only had to undertake a handwriting analysis before he was allowed to write the biography of the graphological obsessive Siegmund Warburg. Emre had to go on a $2,000 Myers-Briggs accreditation session. The experience, I suspect, contributed to the fizz of the final product.

mental assumption presented in McCaul- For example, in the category of extrovert v introvert, you’re either one or the other; there is no middle ground. People don’t work this way, no normal person is either 100% extrovert or 100% introvert, just as people’s political views aren’t purely “communist” or “fascist”. Many who use the MBTI claim otherwise, despite the fact that Jung himself disagreed with this and statistical analysis reveals even data produced by the test shows a normal distribution rather than bimodal, refuting the either/or claims of the MBTI. But still this overly-simplified interpretation of human personality endures, even in the Guardian Science section!
Just My Type (US edition) Self-centered The test ultimately divides people into 16 types, based on the combination of traits they fall into—as demonstrated in the interactive below:

There is clearly an insidious idea here, or at least the potential for one, as the Myers-Briggs indicator found mainstream acceptance from the 1980s onwards. Certainly it can make individuals seem disposable, just cogs in the machine. Still, Emre believes that Katharine and Isabel were fundamentally well meaning. “I think they truly believed they could figure out a way to make people happy,” she says. “They believed that as mothers that was what they had been trained to learn how to do: to try to keep many different people with conflicting desires and conflicting preferences happy under one roof. And their ultimate endgame was happiness but then also productivity.

Create account You are 100% correct in that the MBTI has nothing to do with personality traits [your quote marks were unnecessary], which do exist; it has everything to do with personality types, which no longer exist in modern evidence-based psychology and psychotherapy.
Most significant, the test is entirely self-reported. If you say you are extroverted, that is what the indicator believes. The system leaves no room for one of the most basic human capacities, the capacity for self-deception. Even the parlor game in which people characterize their friends as horses, birds, or muffins allows for false consciousness—for birds who think they are horses, or muffins who think they are birds (as most muffins do).

It explains why we are still influenced by type choices made more than 500 years ago, and why the T in the Beatles logo is longer than the other letters. It profiles the great originators of type, from Baskerville to Zapf, as well as people like Neville Brody who threw out the rulebook. The book is about that pivotal moment when fonts left the world of Letraset and were loaded onto computers, and typefaces became something we realized we all have an opinion about. And beyond all this, the book reveals what may be the very best and worst fonts in the world – and what your choice of font says about you.

Search in comments Just like with extraversion and introversion, all people spend some time sensing and intuiting depending on the situation. According to the MBTI, people tend be dominant in one area or the other. People who prefer sensing tend to pay a great deal of attention to reality, particularly to what they can learn from their own senses. They tend to focus on facts and details and enjoy getting hands-on experience. Those who prefer intuition pay more attention to things like patterns and impressions. They enjoy thinking about possibilities, imagining the future and abstract theories.

Katharine was so taken with Jung’s theories that she wrote to him, declaring his book her “Bible”, and in 1926 the New Republic magazine published “Meet Yourself: How to Use the Personality Paint Box”, an article she had written using Jung’s categories to provide a way for readers to reflect on their own — and others’ — traits. Katharine’s enthusiasm inspired her daughter. In 1942, Isabel wrote to her mother about a Reader’s Digest article she had read on the rise of “people sorting” questionnaires in the workplace. Lockheed Aircraft was using such a test to locate “potential troublemakers”. Another US company used a similar test to select “henpecked husbands”, arguing that a man under the thumb at home would also be easily subjugated at work. Katharine wrote back encouraging Isabel to create her own pencil-and-paper test based broadly on Jungian principles. In 1943, in honour of her mother’s contribution, Isabel named it the Briggs-Myers Type Indicator.

En Español A book about fonts does sound a little dull on first impression, I’ll admit, writes Gordon MacDonald. Who really cares about the shape of letters? What next, a book about the cultural and historical significance of toenail clippers? I made the (understandable) mistake of beginning the research for this review by looking at it as a history of the art of typography and its social or political uses, and even went to the lengths of canvassing the opinion of several young graphic designers on the subject. ‘Not even entry level’ was my favourite response, from a particularly fashionable twenty-something with a hairdo I do not know the name of and a t-shirt I didn’t understand. It would seem that it is not required reading for those educated in typographical understanding. So what and who is this book for?
