In 1962 Educational Testing Service (ETS) — publishers of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the standardised exam taken by most US teenagers heading for university — published Isabel’s test, having persuaded her to change its name to Myers-Briggs in recognition of her leading role in its creation. However, a number of ETS’s own psychologists, according to Paul’s account, “derided [the test] as unscientific rubbish”, and sales were not pushed hard by the company.

Certainly it can make individuals seem disposable, just cogs in the machine. Still, Emre believes that Katharine and Isabel were fundamentally well meaning. “I think they truly believed they could figure out a way to make people happy,” she says. “They believed that as mothers that was what they had been trained to learn how to do: to try to keep many different people with conflicting desires and conflicting preferences happy under one roof. And their ultimate endgame was happiness but then also productivity.

The Thinkers can’t understand the need to agree, because they see debate as a healthy way to discover the truth. Feeling people, on the other hand, can’t understand why someone would want to argue, because they’re focused on getting along. As each becomes aware of the other’s preference, they can build mutual acceptance  and understanding – and they may even be able to use their different personalities to find a balance, especially if they’re working together on a team.

Before founding IdeaFaktory, I’ve had the privilege (and collateral hair loss) of innovating at top Fortune 100 firms, where ‘talk’ was unavoidable. So I decided to codify my lessons as The 4C’s of Innovation(TM). These are: context, creativity, capabilities, and most importantly, culture.  Any innovation worth doing demands cultural change. But who will lead that change? And who will reject it? Why does the same ra-ra event move some employees to tears, but lands like the Hindenburg with others? No need to hire an army of psychologists to electroshock your workforce for answers. Why does the MBTI remain so popular in spite of these problems? Murphy Paul argues that people cling to the test for two major reasons. One is that thousands of people have invested time and money in becoming MBTI-certified trainers and coaches. As I wrote over the summer, it’s awfully hard to let go of our big commitments. The other is the “aha” moment that people experience when the test gives them insight about others — and especially themselves. “Those who love type,” Murphy Paul writes, “have been seduced by an image of their own ideal self.” Once that occurs, personality psychologist Brian Little says, raising doubts about “reliability and validity is like commenting on the tastiness of communion wine. Or how good a yarmulke is at protecting your head.”
