I agree with it. Role Model Advertising Contrary to stereotype, INTJs are more apt to get sensitive than “logical,” and really don’t get critical of others. (Though INFJs definitely do.) When really struggling, INTJ and INFJ “turn it all off” by overindulging in hedonism (drinking, food, sex, etc.) Neither gives two shits about “best practices,” “processes,” or deliberately “brainstorming new ideas” to “make a change,” and certainly don’t while trying to fix a low point.

“Nine times out of 10,” Isabel advised the executives, “the thinker… does think it’s tough on Bates to lose the position, even though he brought it entirely on himself. He does think the coat is a becoming color, though he can’t condone the fit. He could just as well mention these mitigating circumstances. But he does not think it worth the trouble.” Yet from the standpoint of good human relations — and overtasked human relations departments — it was worth the trouble. It prevented people from fighting executives on minor and major “points of difference”; it made subordinates feel respected and appreciated even when they were being reprimanded or, in the case of the hypothetical Bates, dismissed from their jobs. And it gave the executive a profound sense of self-satisfaction. “His own too-little-used feeling will be happier too,” Isabel concluded.

Riggio’s contempt for the test is echoed by most voices in the professional psychological community. The personality testing specialist, Robert Hogan, famously called Myers-Briggs “little more than a Chinese fortune cookie” in his book Personality and the Fate of Organizations. Adam Grant, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, has said “there’s just no evidence behind [the test,]” concluding that it carried no “predictive power” whatsoever. And David J. Pittenger, an assistant professor researching the MBTI at the University of Indiana in the early 90s, stated flatly that “there is no obvious evidence that there are 16 unique categories in which all people can be placed.”

And on the other side, you have the employer that is trying to cut through all the fluff that candidates say about themselves. In this situation, the employer has the huge advantage because they are not alone. There are so many hiring tools and consultants out there, that the single candidate doesn’t stand much of a chance against the onslaught. I think that my book puts that advantage back into the hands of the employee. Yet when we choose Calibri over Century, or the designer of an advertisement picks Centaur rather than American Gothic, what lies behind our choice and what impression do we hope to create? When we choose a typeface, what are we really saying? Who makes these fonts and how do they work? And just why do we need so many? What are we to do with Alligators, Accolade, Amigo, Alpha Charlie, Acid Queen, Arbuckle, Art Gallery, Ashley Crawford, Arnold Bocklin, Auriol Vignette Sylvie, Andreena, Amorpheus, Angry, and Anytime Now? Banjoman, Bannikova, Baylac, Binner, Bingo, Blacklight, Blippo, Bebedot Blonde, Beach House or Bubble Bath? (And how lovely does Bubble Bath sound, with its thin floating linked circles ready to pop and dampen the page?) There are more than 100,000 fonts in the world. But why can’t we keep to a half-dozen or so familiar faces? Or perhaps we should just stick to the classic Garamond, named after the type designer Claude Garamond, active in Paris in the first half of the sixteenth century, whose highly legible Roman type blew away the heavy fustiness of his German predecessors, and later, adapted by William Caslon in England, would provide the letters for the American Declaration of Independence.

These were not the only suspicious results she encountered. Sometimes subjects whom she tested and retested seemed to change type overnight. Thinkers became feelers, judgers became perceivers. The technical term for it was “enantiodromia,” Isabel learned from a rereading of Jung, a “going over to the opposite,” in which one of the preferences a person did not express ascended to a “much more honored place” in the psyche. Her inability to validate the indicator — to show that it produced consistent results for test subjects over time — had a basis in Jungian psychology, Isabel assured Hay. It was consistent with the theory behind the type indicator.
US POLITICS The false belief in personality types has resulted in a deluge of myths, one of the worst being “learning styles” because it is still screwing up our education systems.
RELATIONSHIPS What she started to do was to gather the neighborhood children in her home and test their personalities. She wanted to help them design programs of education that would help each one of them individually self-actualize. So she started by giving their parents a questionnaire — a forced choice questionnaire, which meant there were only two answers, A or B, and you had to choose one.

Reasonable Jung’s interest in typology grew from his desire to reconcile the theories of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, and to define how his own perspective differed from theirs. Jung wrote, “In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one’s psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person’s judgment.” (Jung, [1961] 1989:207) He concluded that Freud’s theory was extraverted and Adler’s introverted. (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 91) Jung became convinced that acrimony between the Adlerian and Freudian camps was due to this unrecognized existence of different fundamental psychological attitudes, which led Jung “to conceive the two controversial theories of neurosis as manifestations of a type-antagonism.” (Jung, 1966: par. 64)

Atlanta Newcomer’s Guide In 1991, the National Academy of Sciences committee reviewed data from MBTI research studies and concluded that only the I-E scale has adequate construct validity in terms of showing high correlations with comparable scales of other instruments and low correlations with instruments designed to assess different concepts. In contrast, the S-N and T-F scales show relatively weak validity. The 1991 review committee concluded at the time there was “not sufficient, well-designed research to justify the use of the MBTI in career counseling programs”.[34] However, this study also based its measurement of validity on “criterion-related validity (i.e., does the MBTI predict specific outcomes related to interpersonal relations or career success/job performance?).”[34] The ethical guidelines of the MBTI assessment stress that the MBTI type “does not imply excellence, competence, or natural ability, only what is preferred.”[28] The 2009 MBTI Form M Manual Supplement states, “An instrument is said to be valid when it measures what it has been designed to measure (Ghiselli, Campbell, & Zedeck, 1981; Murphy & Davidshofer, 2005).”[11] Studies have found that the MBTI scores compare favorably to other assessments with respect to evidence of convergent validity, divergent validity, construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability.[12][13][11]
