Course for companies In addition, many big businesses use the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) as a way to gauge the suitability of new employees. The indicator is also psychologically invalid, for a reason so simple it’s almost surprising. When creating the test using Carl Jung’s theories, mother-daughter team Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers made a fundamental assumption that people’s personalities never changed, and so their results would also never change. This, obvious to anyone who has ever met a person, was not the case. “[Studies] by psychologists showed that people who take the test more than once, even just a few weeks apart, get classified as a different type more than 50 percent of the time,” writes Merve Emre in her new book about the test and its creators, The Personality Brokers. “The MBTI’s test-retest validity is well below acceptable levels of statistical significance.”

Soldiers are solid team players. They’re not as well-rounded as Naturals or Alphas and seek out clarity. They avoid ambiguity (e.g. brainstorming) like it’s a flaming rag at an Exxon station. They can be great at one thing like project management, analysis, process improvement or people development. When in the right roles, they shine, but there’s often a ceiling to their ascent. If they are content, they’re loyal, stay late, and deliver results. They’ll also rally others around the company’s mission. They lack the networking prowess of Survivors and Naturals and rarely inspire the strong loyalty and followership of Alphas.

Submitted by Akhlys Arendt on June 4, 2016 – 10:00am What Is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator? Its expansive usage is not a result of the creators’ psychological bonafides, as they had none. One could forgive them that, seeing as many credentials in clinical psychology didn’t emerge until the post-war era. What we shouldn’t forgive is how Isabel Briggs Myers saw this corrosive usage as the test’s destiny; its widespread usage comes, in part, from her efforts marketing it to management and ownership whenever she could. Profit, not self-discovery, was for what the MBTI was designed. Knowing an employee’s type would be the key to making them as productive as possible.
Foil Round Balloons Winter Amazon Prime The “irrational” (perceiving) functions: sensation and intuition There are two kinds of people in the world: people who think there are two kinds of people in the world and people who don’t. Katharine Briggs and Isabel Myers were the first kind, and the test they invented based on that belief, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, is the most popular personality test in the world. More than two million people take it every year. It is used in twenty-six countries to assess employees, students, soldiers, and potential marriage partners. It is used by Fortune 500 companies and universities, in self-improvement seminars and wellness retreats. There are more than two thousand personality tests on the market, many of them blatant knockoffs of the MBTI, but Myers-Briggs is No. 1. Merve Emre’s “The Personality Brokers” (Doubleday) is the story of how the MBTI fell to earth.

21 September 2018 Enthusiasts of personality testing hail its potency as a tool for exploring and understanding identity, a way to connect the often jumbled dots of personal behavior and preference into a comprehensible pattern. For its proponents, Myers-Briggs acts like a map that provides direction toward people’s proper places in the world. It’s a diagnosis of how a person is meant to be. The appeal of the personality test is the appeal of coherence, the comfort of feeling like you understand yourself. In this way, it shares an allure with other popular people-sorting constructions, like horoscopes, or the Harry Potter sorting hat — a way to assign oneself a community and a reference point. “I tend to think that this inward-glancing search for alternative forms of wisdom and knowledge is just a survival tool in a world that, for a lot of young people today, comes without a reliable map of the future,” my colleague Lindsay Zoladz wrote earlier this year, in a piece about astrology’s current vogue among millennials. Reading Emre’s account of her fellow MBTI attendees’ enthusiasm for the indicator as a tool, I was reminded of Lindsay’s words. The world is scary and hard to understand. With its pseudoscientific vocabulary, approval from prestigious institutions, and positive framing — there are no bad personality types! — Myers-Briggs provides an architecture for understanding people that seems legitimate, unthreatening, and easy-to-use.

In addition, the nature of Katharine Briggs was an intelligent woman, over-invested in her daughter’s scholastic achievements; Isabel was a very recognisable American type, the over-achiever who passes every exam with flying colours and starts spouting total nonsense once there are no further lecture notes to take. The unusual tone of their relationship is captured by Katharine writing to her new son-in-law (a communist) on their wedding day, urging him to make love to Isabel that very evening ‘on the overnight train they would take from Washington DC to Memphis, Tennessee’. With Isabel’s education, ‘once the hope of the world’, now ‘an old, dead project’, Katharine sank into aimless depression. What turned up was Carl Jung’s notoriously insane book Psychological Types, with exactly the alternative possibilities that were going to underlie the test.

Most important,  the comforting illusion of being able to control the emotional weather is just that, an illusion. And it works well enough for most conditions. But watch out when there is an organizational hurricane or drought,  some other unexpected condition or even just time moving on. When everything falls apart, leadership may regret having used the MBTI to hide from the messy human complexities of organizational life. Obviously, when problems are ignored they are not solved; when inevitable conflicts are ignored they are not managed. And the MBTI is so popular because it provides the illusion of solution when, in reality, the problems and conflicts remains as real as ever.

Jung’s interest in typology grew from his desire to reconcile the theories of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, and to define how his own perspective differed from theirs. Jung wrote, “In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one’s psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person’s judgment.” (Jung, [1961] 1989:207) He concluded that Freud’s theory was extraverted and Adler’s introverted. (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 91) Jung became convinced that acrimony between the Adlerian and Freudian camps was due to this unrecognized existence of different fundamental psychological attitudes, which led Jung “to conceive the two controversial theories of neurosis as manifestations of a type-antagonism.” (Jung, 1966: par. 64)

Feeling people, on the other hand, can’t understand why someone would want to argue, because they’re focused on getting along. As each becomes aware of the other’s preference, they can build mutual acceptance  and understanding – and they may even be able to use their different personalities to find a balance, especially if they’re working together on a team.

Even introversion-extraversion, the trait the MBTI captured best, is incomplete. According to the MBTI, extraversion is about where you get your energy: from the outside world or the inner world. This is partially right, but it’s not because of a preference for interacting with people. Our scores are heavily shaped by how our brains process neocortical arousal. As Susan Cain explains in Quiet, “more than a thousand studies conducted by scientists worldwide” suggest that introverts “are more sensitive than extroverts to various kinds of stimulation, from coffee to a loud bang to the dull roar of a networking event.” Besides, it turns out that like all personality traits, introversion-extraversion is shaped like a bell curve: it’s most common to be in the middle. The vast majority of us are ambiverts: in Dan Pink’s words from To Sell is Human, most people are“neither overly extraverted nor wildly introverted.”

Goodbye to MBTI, the Fad That Won’t Die Introvert 18 Sep 2018 Quiz & Worksheet – Developing a Learner-Centered Classroom Read More Download File Clocks In a way, innovation is like sex: those talking about it most are probably doing it the least. Before founding IdeaFaktory, I’ve had the privilege (and collateral hair loss) of innovating at top Fortune 100 firms, where ‘talk’ was unavoidable. So I decided to codify my lessons as The 4C’s of Innovation(TM). These are: context, creativity, capabilities, and most importantly, culture.  Any innovation worth doing demands cultural change. But who will lead that change? And who will reject it? Why does the same ra-ra event move some employees to tears, but lands like the Hindenburg with others? No need to hire an army of psychologists to electroshock your workforce for answers. Unlike fluffier lists of people to hire, I’ve profiled the nine kinds of people in your company now  who will make or break any innovation or change initiative.  (For more on culture change, also check out my new podcast with this week’s guest Stan Slap.)

INIFEJ Tests that draw on the method by Briggs and Myers sort people into 16 different types which are organized by four pairs of opposite traits. Like many other enthusiasts, he describes himself as a “type watcher” — someone who takes pleasure in guessing strangers’ MBTI personality types. A common line from supporters is that the test starts an important dialogue around who we are and how we interact with others.
All this is the wrong context for the MBTI, though. The idea that human beings can be sorted into psychological types is ancient, of course. In the Hippocratic tradition, people could be categorized as innately sanguine, choleric, melancholic, or phlegmatic. (For melancholics, white wine was prescribed, to counteract the black bile.) In nineteenth-century Europe and America, phrenology was used to interpret character.

This month “They’re typically short- and long-term planners who are able to read into data effectively, leading them to find patterns and creative solutions to problems,” explains Jonathan Bollag, an executive coach and founder of Career Assessment site. “They put this information through a logic-based filter in order to make objective decisions. You then add their preference for extroversion that translates to them having an easier time networking and communicating with large groups of people.”
Jung called Extraversion-Introversion preference general attitude, since it reflects an individual’s attitude toward the external world distinguished by the “direction of general interest” [Jung, 1971]: the extravert maintains affinity for, and sources energy from the outer world, whereas the introvert is the other way around – their general interest is directed toward their inner world, which is the source of their energy.
However, myself and many others have found our archetypes to be spookily accurate to how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

The Wrestling Thinking and feeling functions are rational, while sensation and intuition are nonrational. According to Jung, rationality consists of figurative thoughts, feelings or actions with reason — a point of view based on objective value, which is set by practical experience. Nonrationality is not based in reason. Jung notes that elementary facts are also nonrational, not because they are illogical but because, as thoughts, they are not judgments.

Space.com @Purplephoenix03 says: Secondly, people can get different results from their MBTI assessment for a multitude of reasons. The theory holds that each person has an innate type preference. During the administration of an assessment, we are asking the person to self-report their preferences for various scenarios and processes. Many people tend to behave differently while in a work situation than they would at home with friends. Chronic or extreme stress, substance intoxication, major life changes, and many other factors easily take a person from being and experiencing themselves normally to being and thinking out of their ordinary. Certified Practitioners of the MBTI assessment understand that persons undergoing major stress or life changes may have difficulty expressing their preferences accurately. Certified Practitioners explain to their clients what a “preference” means, that all people do use all functions at times, and that the client should answer the questions with regard to what they most prefer or feel most at-home doing, rather than answer based on how they must be at work or with certain persons.

The Myers-Briggs categories have been a pillar of half-witted human resources executives’ presentations ever since, who I suppose have to justify their existence somehow through the magic of PowerPoint.
